Diversity and community

We are committed to creating and supporting a balanced, inclusive and diverse community at Kent.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) support

Kent is firmly committed to promoting equality and preventing discrimination among both our staff and students.

Our aims are to:

  • embed EDI practices into the way we work
  • promote and share best EDI practices
  • develop and promote EDI policies and procedures
  • advise on legislative legislation
  • support staff, departments and services with EDI projects and initiatives
  • brief and update staff on EDI
  • support staff equalities networks.

Who’s involved:

Our equality, diversity and inclusivity activities are led by a dedicated team within Human Resources and supported by EDI Champions within our senior management team.

In schools and departments, you can get information and support from staff who are EDI Representatives and belong to Kent’s EDI Network.

Initiatives

Athena SWAN

Kent has joined and is committed to the principles of the Athena SWAN charter. The charter was launched in 2005 to advance women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEMM).

It expanded in 2015 to include arts, humanities, social science, business and law disciplines as well as professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.

The charter now recognises work to address gender equality more broadly, not just barriers to progression affecting women.

International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT)

This international event is observed worldwide each year on 17 May in approximately 130 countries. Kent marks the occasion by flying the rainbow flag at both our Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Our LGBT Staff Network at Canterbury also run their own stall distributing IDAHOT information and answering questions about support available for LGBT members at Kent.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) History Month

Stonewall

Stonewall is Europe's largest lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) charity.

We are proud to be a member of its Diversity Champion Programme, a best practice employers’ forum for sexual orientation and gender identity, equality, diversity and inclusion.

We take part in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index, an effective way to measure efforts to tackle discrimination and create an inclusive workplace for LGBT employees.

Types of discrimination

The Equality Act 2010 details different types of discrimination, from direct discrimination to discrimination based on association.

Staff networks

Staff Equalities Networks are a good way to meet colleagues outside your own school/department.

EDI Network

The EDI Network promotes communication to, from and between departments and staff and student EDI teams. It provides a forum for EDI Representatives to share information and good EDI practice.

Disability Staff Network

The Disability Staff Network aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for colleagues with disabilities at Kent. It supports disabled staff and those staff working with disability or with an interest in disability. It also provides a forum to share information and consider good practice, and recommends changes in University policy and practice.

LGBT+ Staff Network

The LGBT+ Staff Network promotes positive attitudes to LGBT+ people and raises the profile of LGBT+ equality across the University. Its role includes promoting recognition of discrimination facing LGBT+ staff and ways to address inequalities, and the impact of legislation on Kent’s policies and practices relating to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Women’s Network

The Women’s Network aims to raise awareness and provide a forum for discussion of gender equality, both within the network and across Kent. For example, it promotes communications between individuals and the University’s decision-making committees, forums and networks. It reports annually to the EDI Strategy Group, and makes recommendations to the Joint Staff Negotiating and Consultation Committee (JSNCC).
